Revotec Cooling Fans Buying Guide

Classic cars are best enjoyed on a Summer’s day, with the sun shining and a warm breeze blowing through your open window. The trouble is that this is exactly the sort of weather that can cause your engine to overheat. The thought of being stuck in traffic on a warm day will bring a lot of classic car owners out in a cold sweat - when you should be enjoying your car the most all you’re doing is worrying about breaking down!

A high quality fan that effectively cools your vehicle’s engine is therefore a must have; a low cost accessory that should be at the top of all classic car owners’ lists. There are several cooling fans on the market, but we sell Revotec fans because the quality is excellent, they are tried, tested and recommended by our customers, and the range of fitting accessories are extremely good.

Revotec fans are used as standard by many manufacturers and you can understand why. The build-quality is very good, they are lightweight and have a high output. They are rated for continuous use, so you don’t need to worry about it running for too long, and they are waterproof to IP68, so they can deal with everything the British weather can throw at them.

What do I need to buy?

It’s really quite straightforward, first you need to choose a fan that is the right size for your car. Then you need to decide how you are going to fit it, and how you are going to control it.

We cover all of this in our buying guide, so keep reading!

You need to make sure that your radiator is of the minimum required size for your chosen fan. For example if you are looking at a 12” fan, the minimum radiator size required is 336mm x 318.5mm. Please use the tables shown above to check this.

In addition to this you need to ensure that you have the depth available to provide the necessary space for your fan. If you are considering a 12” fan then a minimum depth of 65mm is needed.

Suck or Blow?

You need to decide whether you are going to mount your fan in front of the radiator or behind it.

If the fan is fitted in front of the radiator (between the grille and the radiator) then you will need a blow fan, that blows cold air through the radiator).

If the fan is fitted behind the radiator (between the radiator and the engine) then you need a suck fan, that sucks hot air away from the radiator).

There are “blow” and “suck” versions of every Revotec fan we offer. Whichever version you decide to go for, just make sure you have the depth available for the fan in your chosen location.

Fitting your Fan

It’s important that your fan is fitted securely to your vehicle. Revotec cooling fans feature 4 integral 6.5mm holes in each corner. These holes are used to fix the fan in position using a choice of mounting kits:

Pull Through Kit

A simply and affordable solution, the pull through kit includes 4x “pull throughs”, 4x 3mm rubber washers, 4x foam pads and 4x push on buttons. The pull through is pushed through the holes in each corner of the fan, threaded through the radiator and secured using a rubber washer.

Suitable for fans up to 14” in diameter, the pull through kit is our most popular mounting option. It is included as standard with the Revotec Unifan kit.

Aluminium Brackets

Laser cut aluminium brackets with 200mm legs. Easily fix to the fan and can then be folded, drilled on big welded to fix to the vehicle. Comes in different sizes dependent on the fan it is going to be used with.

Tailored Fan Kits

Revotec tailor made cooling kits are designed for specific vehicles, and include the fixings required to fit them to the intended vehicle. This can either be a pull through kit or a tailor made aluminium brackets.

Controllers

When it comes to controlling your fan you really have two options; manually operated with a switch or fully automated using a fan controller.

  • Simple and affordable
  • Low cost
  • Unifan Kit includes wiring loom, illuminated switch, switch panel, relay and fuse

Fully Automated

  • Fan controllers are used to automatically start the fan when a certain temperature is reached. This temperature can be adjusted.
  • There are 3 different types of fully automated fan controllers, each fitted in a different way:

1) Revotec Fan Controller with Hose Fitting

  • Designed to splice into the top or bottom radiator hose

  • Negative and positive earth versions available

2) Revotec Fan Controller with Self Sealing Fitting
